Corneal Transplants

A corneal transplant, also referred to as a corneal graft, or a penetrating keratoplasty, is a procedure where the front of the cornea is removed and replaced by a donor cornea. These transplants are performed on patients who have damaged and scarred corneas that prevent acceptable vision. Usually the distortion of vision is caused by corneal scarring or irregularity from disease or trauma. The eye care provider must decide when to recommend keratoplasty because it is often not a straight-forward decision.
